Understanding Gratitude

Every morning, I give myself a simple self-Reiki session. I express my gratitude for my angels and guides and also myself. Who and why I am who I am. What I achieved the day before, what I recognised in others and how I responded. I express my love for myself because in that moment I am different from everything I have been before, and tomorrow, I will be different from what I am today. Even a small change is important to recognise and be grateful for because if there is not even that small change in ourselves, it means we have become stagnant and unresponsive to the world around us.

Reiki helps open us to its universal energy and that helps us grow and expand our awareness and to be grateful for that change. Gratitude is a way of expressing our happiness at the changes in us which in turn gives us a way to be responsive to new things and experiences.

Gratitude is expressive, and expansive. When you express and feel grateful for something, it is sending out an energetic appreciation and an invitation for comparable energy to come to us. All manner of things can give us happiness and be things we are grateful for.

It is not just checking the lottery tickets and finding we have won some money. There is no difference in our gratitude whether it is $7 or $7 million. Both are warming and loving gifts form the universe we should be thankful for. True, $7 million is life changing whereas $7 may not be so, at least in the western world where we have so much but to think less of it sends a message to the universe that you are unhappy with the gift you have been sent.

Never be unhappy with the gifts you receive from the universe. All are valuable and unique in their own way. Let gratitude go out to the universe and let more come back to you. Gratitude for gifts from the universe sending gifts is an eternal cycle. Be part of that cycle be part of the moment, be part of the “Now.”

Something else to consider with the $7 lottery win compared to the $7 million is not the expression of gratitude that you give for receiving it but looking on the $7 as lacking. It is said that Buddhist monks never decline a gift because to do so, is to tell the universe you are not open to receive gifts of any size it may bestow in you.

Not to be thankful for the $7 prize is to look on the negative of it. To look at what it cannot do for you when compared to what the $7 million win could. Do not look at what a gift cannot do for you, be appreciative of what it can and what it is. Be as thankful for the $7-dollar gift in the same way you would for a $7 Million prize would. Say thank you for it and mean what you say.

But remember common sense, do not hand in your resignation when you get $7!

The other thing with gratitude is that it applies to what you have. Your car may not be the newest but it is the one you have and the one that will get you to work, or to the mall or to a show. Be grateful for it and all the other things you have acquired that now offer meaning in your life and make what you are doing easier for you.

There are non-material things in your life you need to be grateful for. Friendships and relationships that fill your life with joy and interest. They take away the shadow of loneliness.

Gifts that are well received and make people happy are warming to the giver just as much as the recipient, there is an energy exchange between the both of you. If the gift is not well received, a negative energy is created and this is not good for either of you. You might feel that you had given them the wrong gift or that they were not open to receiving gifts from you at all. Their tension and lack of joy communicates that the channel for receiving is either closed or is not open to what was given. Negative energy can also be interpreted as tension which adds that tension to any other issues there may be in your relationship.

So, in summary, remember that gratitude expressed when you receive is not just words and a physical expression, it is a message sent out to the universe that you are thankful and open to receive. With that message goes the feeling that any more gifts you receive will also be gratefully received which is a signal to the universe to send more!

Chakras and Crystals

Throughout history and legend, people from all cultures and continents have used the spiritual and healing powers of gems and crystals. Utilized for purely religious purposes as well as communion, physical and spiritual healing, the power of gems and crystals is intertwined with the history of mankind.

It is widely believed that gems & crystals act as amplifiers when brought into contact with the human body’s seven-chakra points. Rotating at different speeds, these Chakra points release energies, imparting the body with its precious life forces. While your chakras can become clogged from stress or anxiety, using gems or crystals in accordance with meditation or bodywork is thought to help balance these energy points, promoting health, happiness and well-being.

While it is not recommended that gems or crystals be used in place of modern medical treatment, many people find that the use of healing gems improves their overall well-being, encouraging a more positive outlook and a generally healthier visage.

Gems or crystals can be used interchangeable for healing purposes. They are commonly chosen to aid specific ailments but many people find that they don’t choose their gem or crystal, it chooses them. While casually perusing gems and crystals you may find that a particular item draws you to it. Follow your instincts. Your body needs all 7 color rays: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet; and you may unconsciously be drawn to the gems or crystals that is most appropriate for you.

Alternatively, you may choose a gem or crystal that relates to one of your energy centers or Chakras that needs clearing, balancing or enhancing. On the next few pages we will explore the qualities of the gemstones and crystals we are using for Chakra healing keeping in mind that as a Reiki Level II Practitioner you may choose to add to your original crystal set for healing sessions or replace certain stones with another choice as you feel guided as many different crystals and gemstones relate to each chakra.

While it is not fully understood how crystal healing works, it is thought to be largely related to the natural vibrations that all crystals emit. Just think of the quartz crystals that are used to power digital watches as an example of crystal vibrations at work.

Crystals and particularly gem quality crystals emit vibrations that affect the wearer’s body. Certain crystal or gem varieties are believed to have positive effects when utilized on particular energy centers or chakras of the body much like deep therapeutic massage and acupuncture.

Crystals are powerful healing tools and you can use them to boost your natural spiritual healing power.  They can help with your physical, emotional, spiritual and financial health.  Crystals are a gift from Gaia, the spirit of our planet, Earth Goddess and no matter what type of healing work you are conducting, crystals can help.

Crystals are filled with energy and are conduits of energy. They amplify their own energy as well as the Divine Universal Energy – Spirit, chi, qi, prana, Light & Love and of course, Reiki.

Clarifies perception as it removes extraneous thought and filters information reaching the brain.

Archangel Gabriel is associated with the Throat Chakra. She is the angel of communication and creativity. Her name means “God as my strength” and is known for helping both parents and children. She is also known to help those with a life purpose in communication and art.

Not just speaking, but your voice can be heard through how your present yourself to the world. Do they see the real you? The throat chakra is key in speaking about your creative endeavours as well as what matters to you in all aspects of your life. People do not know what itis you want, or, don’t want, unless they can hear you clearly. When we speak about people hearing us clearly, we must consider, volume of our speech, is it low, and muddled, or is it loud and clear. Are the words chosen correctly or incorrectly? Are sentences well-ordered or confusing. Call on the archangel for her help in making sure all these issues are taken care of.

This is why Gabriel is wonderful to work with for everyone pursuing a new way of life. Which we are all doing at the moment.

If you are not meditating, now is the time to start, and, while you have started, also join a Yoga studio or class. After you have a few classes under you belt, ask the instructor to help you with poses intended to help balance the Heart Chakra.

Meditation is best done in peace and quiet. Hold your crystal in your left hand if you are sitting, or place it over your throat if laying down. Yoga poses to assist with balancing this chakra – Start with an easy neck release, Bhujangasana, Matsyasana, Salamba Sarvangasana, Viparita Kirani, Jalandhara bandha.

In your private meditation experiment with burning incense. Palo Santo wood incense or another that you find cleansing and relaxing. If you find this doesn’t work for you, that is OK. There are no rules here.

Blocked symptoms include a weak voice, laryngitis, throat pain, neck pain, stiff neck, jaw pain, hypothyroidism, dental problems, writers block, lack of musical ability and problems expressing yourself, there is an inability to say what you really want to say. You may feel like you’re stuck holding onto secrets. Similarly, you may believe that people don’t want to hear your thoughts, or that you can’t find the right words for your feelings.

Once again, a small blockage may mean you only struggle with self-expression at work, or with a particular friend. Meanwhile, a significant misalignment may mean you constantly feel thwarted in communication. Physically, a blocked Throat Chakra may present with pain in the neck, sensitivity to hormone fluctuations, and discomfort in throat tissue.

Overloaded symptoms include neck problems, hyperthyroidism/ talking too much/ talking too loudly, interrupting, speaking without regard for other people’s feelings

Balancing suggestions include singing, humming, listening to music, writing talking to people, listening to people, practicing silence, getting a shoulder and neck massage.

Heart Chakra

Color – Green

Element – Air

Seed Sound – YANG

Location – behind the heart

Sanskrit – Anahata translation – unstuck or intact ‘the heart sings without being played’

Physical anatomy engaged – heart, lungs, shoulders, arms, chest, breasts, thymus gland, cardiac nerve plexus.

This chakra is the ‘connector chakra’ between earthly and spiritual chakras. The balance and strength and compassion that you find within your Heart Chakra will be reflected in all areas of your life and in everything that you do. A healthy and open-Heart Chakra enhances your healing ability when used on Self or others. Improving your posture automatically opens your Heart Chakra more fully.

The Chakra represents your ability to give and receive love, your capacity to love yourself and your sense of compassion and empathy for all beings

Blocked symptoms include heart disease, lung problems, relationship problems, commitment issues, fear of intimacy, being judgmental and an inability to feel compassion and you’ll struggle to relate to other people. You will be less compassionate than usual and may be impatient.

You’ll commonly find it harder than usual to trust, and you won’t feel at peace. Rather, you’ll feel restless and disgruntled that your life seems to have stopped progressing. You have an unusual connection to past events, people and relationships with a “what if… maybe it could have been longing.” A blocked Heart Chakra can also manifest physically. Some Chakra experts think such a misalignment may be linked to issues like high blood pressure and low immune system function.

If you are not meditating, now is the time to start, and, while you have started, also join a Yoga studio or class. After you have a few classes under you belt, ask the instructor to help you with poses intended to help balance the Heart Chakra. Yoga poses to aid in balancing this chakra – Bhujangasana, Gomukhasana, Garudasana, Ustrasana, Matsyasana, Marjaryasana, Urdhva Mukha Svanasana.

You might want to purchase a crystal associated with the Heart Chakra. The crystal is Rose Quartz:

  • Known as the “Love stone”.
  • opens Heart Chakra to all forms of love, self and other
  • lowers stress
  • soothing and happy stone
  • brings gentleness, forgiveness, compassion, kindness and tolerance.
  • raises self-esteem and self-worth
  • emotional balancing stone
  • aids in healing emotional wounds and bringing a sense of peace and calm
  • removes fears, resentments, guilt and anger
  • eases and aids in releasing childhood traumas
  • helpful and protective during pregnancy and with childbirth
  • helps in healing the heart, the circulatory system, fertility, headaches, kidney disease, migraines, sexual dysfunction, sinus problems, throat problems, depressions, addictions, earaches, slowing signs of aging, spleen problems, fibromyalgia and maintaining an ideal weight.
  • color – pink

It is a stone of unconditional love and infinite peace. Promotes receptivity to beauty in all levels – including love and self-love. An emotional healer, releasing unexpressed emotions and heartache soothing internal pain and opening your heart so that you become receptive. If you have loved and lost, it comforts your grief.  Invokes self-trust and self-worth. Excellent for trauma or crisis, it acts as a rescuer and provides reassurance and calm. Draws off negative energy, strengthens empathy and sensitivity and promotes necessary change.

You can either carry it in the form of a ring, a pendant, or as a loose crystal in the pocket.

Use Reiki in your private meditation and also use it in your Yoga class. Reiki is intelligent energy and will know your intention in performing the poses you are is to help rebalance your Heart Chakra.

In your private meditation experiment with burning incense. Palo santo wood incense or another that you find cleansing and relaxing. If you find this doesn’t work for you, that is OK. There are no rules here.

Meditation is best done in peace and quiet. Hold your crystal in your left hand if you are sitting, or place it over your heart if laying down.

Archangel Chamuel governs the Heart Chakra. Ask him to be present. You may feel or sense nothing, you may feel tingling or sense an increase in the vibration of your space. You have after all invited an archangel to your side to help with your Heart Chakra. Speak or think the problem you feel with your Heart Chakra and ask for Chamuel’s help healing it.

As mentioned before, the color associated with the Chakra is Green. You may sense green on the inside of your eyelids, your eyes are closed, aren’t they? You may feel as though the color green is within you and expanding from the Heart Chakra outwards.

Spend some time with this energy, it is healing, comforting and cleansing. Feel the healing inside and out. Allow it to wash over and through you.

Slowly bring yourself out of this state. Breathe deeply and recharge the oxygen in your system. Slowly wake up. Your Heart Chakra has been recharged, but it is one of many on the human body. Let the energy in your heart flow to the others.

There will be more posts on clearing and energizing other Chakras soon.

Gratitude for my many blessings

As a Reiki Practitioner, I respect the Five Reiki principles written down by Dr Usui.

Of the five let’s focus on:

  • I’m grateful for my many blessings

As part of start of your day, spend a few moments thinking about the Gift of Reiki and how you can help to promote and use it for the betterment, of people you come into contact with. Visualize and feel grateful for each blessing – a person, an object, a situation in your life.  Let your heart expand as you do so.  Take some time with this.  When you are complete with this process, go onto the fourth principle.

While you may know the situations that you are grateful for, there are others you do not, they come as a surprise to you, whether that surprise is a happy one or not so happy depends on your view point and intention. The fact these surprises and life challenges come to you is part of your spiritual growth, they help you grow and be adaptable and successful. When they arrive, focus on what gifts you have, rather than what you do not. Whether it is the physical, mental, emotional or spiritual world healing begins to take place when you use what you have. What you have is worth practicing gratitude for.

Your experience with Reiki, the universal energy that heals and helps all of us will be just right for the healing session you will be doing for a recipient. Love and enjoy the experience and at the same time help the person receiving Reiki. Gratitude is healing your thoughts to make you a better conduit for Reiki at the same time you are better able to help and heal the person you are conducting the session for.

Focusing on the negative in your life is damaging to your intention to do good, to provide Reiki energy to help another. It is also damaging to our mind and body because negative thoughts bring worry, fear, doubt and more worry. As the worry circle repeats, so does the feeling that you are not able to perform your duties as a Reiki Practitioner. Ultimately, you can end up doubting your ability to be a conduit for Reiki energy and the spiral continues downwards.

To promote Reiki healing, we must focus our perception on what is to appreciate and what is good in our lives. That healing can be a big help if part of our negative feeling is the result of our own physical illness. As practitioners we often forget that we need Reiki healing ourselves. Sit down and quietly start to perform a self-Reiki session, discover what it is that needs attention in yourself. Some people think of Self-Reiki as being selfish. That in some way we are denying another person the Reiki energy we are consuming.

That cannot be further for the truth. Reiki Energy is a Universal Healing energy. There is no limit to it. So, give time and Reiki energy to yourself before you attend to someone else. You will see your outlook and consciousness start to brighten as Reiki removes negative thinking from our minds and repairs start to be made to your mind, body and spirit.

Being able to express and be grateful within ourselves does not mean there will be not problems or challenges. As I have mentioned there will be many but it is how we accept and work with them, how we understand what they mean to us. Being positive and grateful for the challenges immediately changes our thoughts and feelings towards those situations. I can see that even though the experience feels unpleasant, there is some good to be found in it. Even where there is pain, there is learning and growth.

While these are day-to-day experiences, we all carry the scars and hurt feelings for situations that have happened in he past. The same approach as we use for daily challenges can be applied to old situations. Being able to release these experiences allows us to put down the baggage of those events that have haunted us until now. With our lightened load we can more effectively practice gratitude for ourselves.

I keep a daily journal, one of the things I write about is my feeling of gratitude for at least one thing for that day that you never thought to be grateful for before.

Starting with Reiki

Over the years I have had Reiki sessions form a number of practitioners. All sessions were incredibly beneficial to me, I always felt at peace with myself and my life for weeks and months after.

But it was the last practitioner who mentioned I had a skill, something useful to others that I was unaware of. It would be a new path for me. She moved on to follow her own path but left me with a very beneficial contact who would help me follow my new path.

I was attuned to Reiki Level 1 shortly after I meet my Registered Reiki Teacher and Practitioner. My studies with Reiki, the history, the vibrancy of Reiki energy, the clarity of thought and purpose it gave me and the desire to help others encouraged me to continue with added purpose and vigor. I am attuned to Master Teacher Level and I too am a Registered Reiki Teacher and Practitioner under the Canadian Reiki Association and A Usui Tibetan Reiki Master Teacher under the International Association of Reiki Professionals.

Attunement happens as part of your studies at each Attunement level. It is performed by a Reiki Master. It takes minutes to complete and is different for every person. You may feel or become aware of Reiki energy or you may not. In my case, my connection with the new Reiki Symbols and energy that I received in the Attunement happened after the event, when I was at peace in my own space. There was a sense of a new width to my connection to Reiki and awareness that when needed, that width would be taken up by Reiki.

Following attunement, it is sometimes the case that the new energy we are receiving unblocks and releases stuck energy from the body. Energetically, it also removes energy that no longer meets our purpose. The remains of a relationship that did not work out is removed at this time. Depending on how receptive you are, how much stuck energy there is, and how much energy baggage you are carrying around with you, this clearing can take some time.

I was fortunate, the time and the effects of the energy clearing were minimal. As the days passed, my link to this powerful energy became stronger and gave me a sense of purpose and I came to understand the direction I was to follow, what my life path purpose is.

Connecting to Reiki changes everything. Colors are deeper and richer, especially when I am out in nature, walking in the park. When I am in the park and stop on a bench, it is because I am feeling my connection to nature and everything round me is deeper. There is a feeling that all around me is energy, it is growing and diverse, and will always be there. I understand that all creatures are sentient beings, all are energetic and each has a spirit and is connected to the universal energy as we are becoming aware of. We are part of nature, not an observer or by stander of nature. whole I am there, Reiki helps to release my stress and worries.

Intuition and intention expand. I have a broader relationship with the world and who I interact with every day. Increasingly, there is a sense of being awakened to this wonderful physical world and to the spiritual, energetic world.

Over time, this connection with the natural world matures and we understand that all creatures are sentient beings and we connect with them on a much deeper level. We become part of nature, as opposed to being simply an observer of nature. We learn to live in harmony with all beings. We learn the way of love and light.

Five Principles of Reiki

The Five Principles of Reiki are:

The Five Reiki Principles
The Five Reiki Principles laid down by Dr. Usui

These simple principles were created by Dr Usui after he had started practicing in the Beggar quarter of Tokyo.

Also included in the principles of Reiki sit e notion of Gratitude – “Just for today, I will be grateful.”

Gratitude is a powerful thing. When we receive anything, showing gratitude to the giver is as good for ourselves as it for the person to know we are grateful for what they gave to us. It helps us to feel special and appreciated and that increases our spiritual vibration.

One thing I do every morning is to create a new page with the date in my Journal. This is a record of dreams; aspirations and hopes for what I am doing and things I am grateful for. It starts the new day and also ends the previous day. It is also a great way to start the day, like a clean slate.

Here are some ideas to express gratitude for, and a way to do it that is easy to remember.

Write down “I am grateful for the blessings of the universe. I am grateful for the gifts of… [then fill in the blank with what you are grateful for].

Waking up in the morning – I think we are all grateful for a new day in our lives.

Our Bodies. Now you may be unhappy with how you look, how you feel, but your physical body is the container in which your soul experiences each day. To be blunt, without your body, you would be dead so be grateful!

Air, sunshine and chirping birds and animals around us including our pets.

That we have someone to love. We all have someone to love, we love ourselves, we love us, we treasure us.

Food and water, are forms of abundance. Be grateful for them and be grateful for other forms of abundance such as material wealth and things that make our lives more comfortable.

Jobs, work, pleasure, friends, parents, all are things or people we can be grateful for.

Above all, the presence of Reiki in our lives. It is enriching intellectually and spiritually, and if we practice, it is a gift we give to others. So, be grateful for Reiki and the fact you can give, share, help others with Reiki energy.
